Dear Bono (and U2),
You guys rock, seriously. I'm a huge fan. I can't decide what music of yours I like more, the older stuff or the newer stuff. I've yet to find a band with the magnitude of greatness that you guys have, and that's saying a lot because besides you guys, my other two favorite bands are Pink Floyd and Hanson (and I fully believe that you respect me saying Hanson as you are musicians yourself and have made a flub or two and thus are more prone to look past "mmmbop" and dig deeper into their musical endeavors.) Anyway, the point is, I seriously love you guys - not only for the gigantic catalog of awesome music that you've put out for nearly 30 years but also because of who you are as people.
Your humanitarian efforts are inspiring. You do things that so many others want to do and would do given the resources. I really appreciate the fact that you don't just take our money and live a selfish gluttonous lifestyle. You actually do something, which is so rare in a society of plastic celebrities who will throw money at any cause that the latest A-lister promotes without even knowing fully what it is about. You go out and research...you go to these places...you don't just throw money at them, you try to change them. That's admirable. You don't care about the petty "who's right and who's wrong" issues...you look beyond it to see the person in need. And, regardless of what you say, you are rebels in a world of people who just want to look the other way and throw money at things hoping for a change...you look the ugliness of life in the face and embrace it. I aspire to do so much.
Among your humanitarian efforts are the songs you write...I've yet to find one that doesn't have a message we can all learn from in it. Specifically close to me recently is "Walk On" and while I realize what it was written about, I also realize it is a message that we can all embrace. I lost my uncle recently, and the pain is still so real and so big...watching my family hurt makes it worse. The words to this song are such an encouragement. It sounds stupid, but it almost feels like you guys are talking directly to me. That's just the amazing ability that you guys as musicians have...to make the song feel human and relate to anyone and everyone. Thank-you for that. Thank-you for writing songs standing up for what you believe. Thank-you for writing songs about your faith and provoking people to take a closer look at their own faith. Thank-you for caring about what you write about.
So, with all that being said, from the bottom of my pathetic little heart, let's get down to business. The lyrics to your song "Elevation" are a little off. I've always thought so. When you sing "a mole digging in a hole digging up my soul"...I really feel like you should be singing "a mole digging in a hole, screaming out "OH NO!!" I mean, doesn't that just sound way cooler? I knew you'd understand :)
So anyway, that's about it. Oh yeah, my friend doesn't like the fact that Bono skips from 3 to 14 in Spanish in Vertigo, but you know what? My friend can suck it because Bono rocks...(well, Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen Jr. you guys rock too). So, thanks guys for years worth of music that I can introduce my children to. Now, could you just come to OKC on tour please?
Jacqueline
